The Trevor Romain Foundation was first organized in 2005 after a visit to a children’s hospital in Ohio where Trevor met a 12 year old boy that had been battling cancer for several years. The two became friends and one day he asked Trevor if he would help him write a book. Together they wrote, Best of Lauck. Through the generosity of family and friends, funds were collected so that the boy and his family could travel together to California where Trevor was attending the Newport Beach Film Festival.
In 2007, the Trevor Romain Foundation received its first major donation and was designated as a 501(c)(3) public charity.
In February of 2008, we celebrated our official launch with the viewing of Drawing Closer, the movie produced and directed by Carl Thiel based on the children living with cancer that Trevor has worked with over the years.
This same year, the Trevor Romain Foundation began to develop a series of comfort kits that would be customized to meet a child’s specific needs. In general, a comfort kit includes a topic specific DVD, a journal for self expression, a caregiver information booklet, a keepsake box, and a plush toy representing one of Trevor Romain’s illustrations.
In 2009, the Foundation created and began distributing Grief Comfort Kits, a set of resources to help children cope with the loss of a family member. At this time, the Foundation embraced the opportunity to partner with the USO and the Department of Defense. Through these distribution partnerships, thousands of Grief Kits have been given to the children of fallen US service members—including families with children attending the Dignified Transfer Ceremony at Dover Air Force Base.
Building on the partnership with the USO and DOD, in March, 2010, the Foundation launched the With You All the Way! Deployment Kit. Designed to address the unique needs of children who have a deployed family member, the kits feature kid-friendly resources that provide children with information and advice during a family member’s pre-deployment, deployment, and reintegration. To date, thousands of kits have been given to the children of service members at bases nationally and internationally.
In September, 2011, the Foundation launched its newest resource, the Taking Care of You! Support for Kids of Injured Heroes comfort kit. This kit addresses the challenges children face when a service member returns with physical and/or emotional injuries. The resources help children understand the types of injuries as well as recovery and reintegration.
Focusing on the unique challenges that military children face, the Trevor Romain Foundation became The Comfort Crew for Military Kids, an organization committed to providing support and comfort for military children and their families.
